The thought of helmets is not a new idea at all they have been around since the 1800s. The high bicycle riders discovered they were getting too many head injuries and so the pith helmet was made. Pith is derived from plants and was the most suitable material to make a helmet from in those days. Even though the pith could be collapse on impact, riders still wore them they only had to be protected from a fall as far as hitting the road they were on.
